How Much Does Interior Design Cost? Here's How We Think About It

Interior design project by Q + Co Design, Mornington Peninsula

It's the question right behind "do I need a designer?" — and the one people are far less likely to ask out loud. You'll type it into Google late at night instead: how much does an interior designer actually cost?

We're not going to give you a number that means nothing until we understand your project. But we can walk you through exactly how we think about it — so a conversation with us starts from a place of clarity, not guesswork.

Why we don't lead with a number

Every project that comes to us is different — a considered renovation, a complete transformation, a new build from the ground up. The investment involved in each of those is genuinely different, not just a bigger or smaller version of the same fee.

    What shapes it:

    • The scale of the project — one space or the whole home
    • Whether we're brought in early, at the concept and layout stage, or later for styling and furniture
    • How much documentation the project needs to hand cleanly to your builder and trades
    • How many consultants and specialists the project requires us to coordinate
    • Your own clarity going in — a well-formed brief moves faster than one we're still shaping together

A studio that quotes you a number before any of this is understood is either guessing, or padding the figure to cover themselves. We'd rather do neither.

How we actually work out the right fit

Every project with us starts the same way — with a conversation, not a quote.

Initial Design Call. A complimentary, obligation-free call with our Lead Designer. We talk through your project, your goals, and your timeline, and outline the most sensible next step.

On-Site Design & Planning Review. From there, we recommend an on-site consultation at your property. This is where we look at your space, talk through direction, aesthetic, materials, and layout, and work out which of our two service pathways genuinely suits your project — Full-Scope Interior Design, or Interior Styling & Furniture.

Your tailored proposal. Following that review, you receive a proposal specific to your project — laying out each stage, from concept through to design development and documentation, with clear deliverables at every step.

This is what lets us give you a fee that means something, rather than a range that could mean anything.

    What you're actually investing in

Good design isn't just someone with taste picking finishes. Across a Full-Scope project, you're paying for:

    • Time spent understanding how you and your family actually live in the space — not just how it should look
    • Decisions made properly on paper — through concept, 3D walk-throughs and documentation — before a builder is ever on site, which is where changes are cheapest
    • Coordination across town planners, architects, builders, and joinery specialists, so nothing falls through the cracks
    • Access to materials and finishes that genuinely hold up in a coastal environment, not just ones that photograph well
    • A second, experienced eye on decisions you may only get to make once

The cost of an undone mistake — a layout that doesn't work, a finish that doesn't last, a decision made under pressure mid-build — is almost always higher than the design fee that would have prevented it.

    Let's talk about your project

We work with a select number of clients at a time, so each project gets the attention it deserves. That's also why we don't publish a price list — your fee should reflect your project, not an average of everyone else's.

The best way to find out what yours looks like is to start where every Q + Co project starts.
